During leafbare, a layer of ice covers the water, while the water at the bottom remains in liquid form, storing fish at the bottom until the ice melts in newleaf. Some cats are able to break the ice and reach fish that sit at the bottom. However, they have to be careful not to fall in or they could be trapped under the ice with no way out. Apprentices are always warned to steer clear of the ice unless it has been tested by a warrior first.
